A sketch by Madge Gill
This exposition is currently on display in the Kubo Kutxaespacio Hall until the end of February and consists of a collection of works dedicated to the style of art known as Art Brut characterised by its inspiration in the genius and delirium of everyday people. The artists themselves are not driven by fame, money or the desire to please their audience; nor are they subject to influence by that of traditional art movements. This style of art leaves behind any notion of rationality and is inspired from deep within the artist, many of whom are mentally ill and/or exist on the margins of society.
This exposition represents the most important collection of works in this genre consisting of 12 artists with distinct backgrounds (taxi drivers, tailors, construction workers, the mentally ill). They have no personal or intellectual connection and have never belonged to similar artistic groups all of which is important to verfiy the true originality of their works. They are: Aloïse Corbaz, Paul Amar, Carlo Zinelli, Curzio di Giovanni, Josef Hofer, Madge Gill, Kunizo Matsumoto, Reinhold Metz, Nek Chand, Laure Pigeon, Eugenio Santoro y Adolf Wölfli.
The only connection between these artists is found in the title of the exhibit: genius and delirium and the fact that they are all self-taught. Each one has their own tumultuous past. Adolf Wölfi (1864-1930) was abandoned by his father, lived with various families and was arrested for shameless public behaviour. Madge Gill (1882-1961), drawn to spiritualism and astrology, began to draw, write and embroider guided by the spirit she called, Myrinerest (which could be translated as my inner peace) after the passing of several of her children. Josef Hofer (1945) never went to school. He lived out his childhood in isolation from the rest of the world on his familys farm. Deaf-mute from birth, he didnt establish any sort of social connection with the outside world for 40 years.
These are just a few examples of the tumultuous lives that inspire this powerful form of self expression know as, "Art Brut". This is an exposition unlike any that you have seen before; in the words of Jean Dubuffet, the founder of Art Brut, this is art at in its purist form.
