Brita's Pocket Spanish

MINI-SPEAK SPANISH FOR VISITORS

This briefing for visitors de Spain was drafted in 1990 by Brita Heycraft, co-founder of International House (ih). It has been used by many ih staff visiting Spain, and it gives the basic tools to survive on your first visit.

GENREAL RULES AND PRONUNCIATION

Spanish is an easier language to learn than French. Most long words in English also exist in Spanish, often ending in -o, -a, or -e.

If you skip the verbs and minispeak, you'll find it very easy indeed. Instead of bothering with a whole sentence, 'How much does it cost?, just say 'How much?' with interest, optionally adding 'Por favor' - 'please' .

Practise stressing the last syllable in words ending in a consonant: información, estación, comedor (dining-room), principal, catedral etc.

Otherwise, stress the last but one syllable: visita, entrada, plaza, flamenco, unless you see an accent elsewhere: histórico, romántico.

Enjoy the Spanish sounds, rolling the r like in Por favor , a like lalala, o as in 'awe'.

Use the Scottish 'loch' sound for g and j: general, Don Juan, gente. The spellings cu and gu are pronounced kw and gw: 'La cuenta, por favor' = The bill, please. 'Agua, por favor' = Water, please.

Double ll is similar to English y: llamada (Phonecall), llegada (Arrival)

You know ñ from 'mañana'. And H is silent.

The article 'the' is 'el' for -o words, 'la' for -a words: el río. The river, el castillo

The castle, la casa - The house. Chance it with - e words: el postre - The dessert la calle - the street
