GIANT BASQUE WAVES

This week a strong low pressure system unleashed its power on the Basque coast. Local big wave surfers were in their element in the huge waves as several surf spots near San Sebastian produced perfect giant surfable waves. Spots such as Playa Gris and Orrua, both between Getaria and Zumaia, were the centre of attention when the swell hit Wednesday. Today, Friday the 17th, the swell is even larger and more waves are expected throughout the weekend and into next week. The local newspaper, Diario Vasco, recently published an article about the Basque big wave phenomenon that discusses the local tradition, the surfers’ preparations and the imminent dangers.
