Meet our recently appointed Director of Marketing Javier Echarri, better known as Javi. In the interview below Javi shares his past experiences and his goals for the future as well as his personal view of San Sebastian.
Where are you from?
I am from San Sebastian
How long have you lived in San Sebastian if not from here?
Since I was 5 years old. I used to live in Tolosa, a city 20 kilometres from San Sebastian.
What did you do before coming to Lacunza?
I studied Business Administration and obtained a MBA in Newport (Wales). About my working experience, I started working as Area Sales Manager for a multinational. I was there for 4 years. Alter that, I worked as Area Manager in a security company, and for the last year I have been working as a consultant, making marketing plans for various companies.
Why do you think it is important to learn Spanish?
If we take into account the constant growth of the globalised market, languages have become one of the most important keys for accessing new markets and creating new opportunities. Spanish is one of the most spoken languages worldwide, so it is indispensable in the process towards a good professional development.
What are your goals as the new marketing manager at the school?
I think it is essential to strengthen the image of Lacunza. We have a very well-known name in the languages world and we have to put it at the top! I would like to be able to have our catalogue (paper or electronic) everywhere it is needed.
Why is San Sebastian a good place to study Spanish?
I think that the city has everything. We are very lucky for living in an ideal environment: beach, sea, mountain, snow… Furthermore, the size of the city is perfect, neither too big nor too small. You can go everywhere on foot.
The Spanish we speak in San Sebastián is really good. We have a great pronunciation that helps the students to obtain a clear Spanish accent that is easy to understand.
What do you like the most about San Sebastian?
As I started saying in the previous question, it is a city that has everything: from the first moment it wins the hearts of the visitors (that is why so many students visit us again year after year).
The locals are very kind and pleasant. It is said that if you make a friend from San Sebastian, you have a friend forever.
I love going out for a walk, from “El Peine del Viento” to the port, going to the old part and eat some pintxos (if you come to San Sebastian and do not try “pintxos”, it is like if you have not been here).
Then you have the beaches, the sea… this calmness that floats in the streets… It is difficult for me to say what I like the most about my city. I love San Sebastian and everything inside it. I would not change it for anything in the world.
