The regions red wine has a taste of vanilla and citrus with a few hints of blackberry. With an acid taste and a lot of fruit wich makes it excellent to accompain many dishes.
The area Rioja coincide with the region La Rioja, but not completely. Some parts of Rioja Alavesa is placed in the Basque country (País Vasco). Because of that many of the wine houses here have basque names.
The capital of La Riojas is Logroño but the truth wine centre is the small town Haro, 1,5 h from San Sebastian.
The red wine in Rioja is qualified in the following levels:
- Cosecha or Vino Jóven - Young wine wich normally is stored in oakbarrels. It is wery fruity, has a dark red colour and should not be stored in bottle more than a few years.
- Crianza - wine that has been stored in oakbarrels for at least 12 months and are not allowed to the market until the beginning of the third year after harvest. This are the most fruity wine with the typical Rioja taste, to many considered to be the most easiest to like.
- Reserva - wine that have to be stored at least 4 years before reching the market. At least one year in oakbarrel. These wines are less fruity than the Crianza, but more developed and have more nuances .
- Gran Reserva - wine that has been stored at least 2 years in oakbarrel and 3 years in bottle or vice verse. It reaches the market the sixth year after harvest. These wines have a very very developed taste.
The scool organizes wine tastings where you can try diffrent kinds of the famous Rioja wines, cider and the local drink Txakoli, a slightly sparkling white wine.
