How does San Sebastian sound?

We continue showing you the diversity of experiences that you can live during your linguistic and cultural immersion stay in Lacunza IH San Sebastian. This month you just need to keep your ears open and let yourself be carried away by the sounds that will surround our city.

During the third week of July, San Sebastián is transformed: people walk through its streets to the rhythm of trumpets, clarinets, double basses, saxophones, pianos... and it seems that the waves break following their melody. Do you know what event it is? It is the Jazz Festival, better known in Basque as the jazzaldia. An essential annual event for lovers of this musical genre.

Imagine the pleasure of attending a live concert, with the best musicians on the current jazz scene, on a stage facing the sea while enjoying the pleasant temperatures of the San Sebastian summer. It is an opportunity to get to know the life of the city, new people, share tastes and experiences and, of course, enrich your Spanish.

To encourage you to visit the Jazz Festival, we tell you some curious facts:

  • The Festival was inaugurated in September 1966. It is the oldest in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe.
  • Great stars of contemporary jazz and blues such as Chick Corea, Doc Cheatham, Charles Mingus or BB King have passed through these stages.
  • At first it was held in La Plaza de la Trinidad, in the heart of the Old Town. Subsequently, it was moved to larger venues such as the Sports Center and the Velodrome due to the large attendance of the public.
  • Currently, the original Festival venue has been recovered and concerts are held on 12 different stages.

Are you interested in knowing how to attend? The first thing is to choose between the wide range of free concerts and paid concerts with different prices and discounts; open-air concerts and concerts in closed venues such as the Victoria Eugenia Theater or the Kursaal Auditorium. Since Lacunza IH We recommend our favorite place: the stage of Plaza de la Trinidad, for its history and the intimate atmosphere that is created during the concerts.

But, in addition to it, there are other unique spaces where there are always free concerts: Zurriola Beach, the Kursaal terraces and the Club Naútico terrace. From there, you will be able to enjoy the city from different angles and savor a cocktail of jazz and emotions.

La 56 edition of Jazzaldia It is celebrated this year from July 21 to 25, with all the security measures due to Covid-19. Here is the link to their website so you can see this year's events and start planning your agenda: 56 Jazzaldia – Donostiako Jazzaldia. How will San Sebastián sound to you?
